Technical Pro Dual Is a 3.0 ghz dual core processor better/faster then a 2.5 ghz quad core processor?
I'm looking at getting a Dell XPS 630 and I wanted to know wether a Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 (6MB L2 cache, 3.0ghz, 1333FSB) was faster and/or better then a Intel Core 2 Quad G8300 (4MB L2 cache, 2.5 ghz, 1333FSB)? Im pretty knowledgeable when it comes to computers so if you know the technical details, go ahead a give them. I'd like to know pro's and con's of both if there are any. And lastly, if the quad core is better, is $79 worth the upgrade.
Btw, I'll be using it for all types of design programs. Adobe Creative Master suite, 3D design like 3DS studio max, and playing games such as Crysis, NFS Shift. Those are the most demanding of my tasks.
This Intel core 2 Duo e8400 is fast but not as fast as the quad core. Basically when it comes to computing, they measure CPU speeds of ONE CORE. So if you have 2 cores, then that means you double the speed. For example, E8400@3.0ghz. You times that buy 2 because you have 2 cores and that gives you 6ghz power. The cache is a smart chip which is very intelligent and prepares what resources are probably going to be required by the processor or computer and it prepares it so it can run faster. Bigger cache means you can have more resources ready. Although 4MB cache is pretty big. Another thing you need to know is that some games don't support 4 cores but i am very sure Adobe and recent games made in 2006+ supports multi-threading. The Quad core speed is 2.5ghz and has 4 cores. So it has a overall power of 10ghz. So the Quad core is faster. The FSB (Front Side Bus) is how fast your processor can get resources from your system memroy (RAM) whenever there is a cache miss or usually it requires it from RAM.
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 (6MB L2 cache, 3.0ghz, 1333FSB). PROS: It has a 6MB L2 Cache, much bigger than the Quad core one. It has a FSB of 1333mhz same as the Quad core. CONS: It has 2 cores running at 3.0ghz each and is slower than the quad core. Intel core 2 Quad Q8300 (4MB L2 cache, 2.5ghz, 1333FSB). PROS: This is faster than the E8400 Duo but 2 times. It has the same FSB as the E8400. CONS: It has lower cache size but the faster CPU should cope with that.
So thats basically about it. Anyway the Quad core is faster than the Duo. I guess its worth a upgrade if you want your computer to run faster. If you need more info or anything, please and please email me! Thanks (Exercise for my tests xD)
